Tonight’s Riverdale was one of those episodes where you sit and watch for an hour, think you know exactly what’s going to happen, and then you get a curveball at the very last possible moment.

The twist in question was the very last scene, where Archie, Veronica, and Betty are randomly standing in a police lineup. Two kids in prep school uniforms (Jughead’s school, we can probably assume) are on the other side of the glass, and they say, “Those are the kids we saw kill Jughead.” WOW. OKAY.

Season 3 ended with the cliffhanger of Archie, Veronica, and Betty burning their clothes at a mysterious bonfire. They burned Jughead’s beanie, which spawned about a million fan theories, many of which ended with Jughead being dead. The end of tonight’s episode seems to support that theory.

Here’s a question though. Is Riverdale is trying to fake us out? It would be very on-brand for them to make us all think Jughead was dead and then pull the rug out from under us in the season finale. That’s just how this show is! Crazier things have been done.

There are a few things getting in the way of me fully believing Jughead is dead. First, F.P. probably wouldn’t be involved in his own son’s murder investigation. That’s gotta be a conflict of interest somehow. Plus, if Cole Sprouse were leaving Riverdale, it would have been very hard to keep that a secret. Someone would have found out by now, right?

When season 4 started, there were a few other theories about who died at that bonfire. People thought it could be Charles or Hiram. Other people said no one died, and it was just a cult ritual. Maybe it’s an elaborate cover-up and Jughead and co. are faking his death. Only time will tell, I guess!
