Robin Roberts Becomes Overwhelmed With Emotion While Discussing Her Personal Life Journey
Good Morning America's Robin Roberts has shared a lot about her personal life with the world over the years, but the 63-year-old recently took her vulnerability a step further in a new interview, getting visibly emotional as she talked about tough topics.
Roberts sat down with Jamie Kern Lima for an episode of her podcast, The Jamie Kern Lima Show, opening up about her struggles coming out—both to her family and the world on television—accepting herself in her religion, figuring out the type of love she deserves, and more.
While discussing her decision of when to publicly share her sexuality with the world, she noted that a factor was not wanting to hinder the success of GMA, saying, "I didn’t want to do anything to hurt those people who I’ve been working with and absolutely adore.”
But she also revealed, "I’ve never said this before, part of it is because of my Christianity. I was afraid that people, they think you can’t be gay and a Christian. And I am. I am and I was so fearful that I would be shunned."
Thankfully, Roberts and her wife, Amber Laign, have received a major amount of support, including from the Christian community: "I received a letter, a beautiful letter from the National Office at the Presbyterian Church after I announced about Amber, fully supportive, and then I think about all those years I wasted, worried, needless worry.”
Throughout the conversation, Roberts also shared how her mother reacted to her being gay, and how their relationship shifted over time. She touched on her health struggles as well, as Roberts has had breast cancer two times, as well as a blood disorder called myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) that required a bone marrow transplant.
Fans appreciated seeing this emotional side of the GMA anchor, with many sharing their support online. Alongside people thanking Roberts for sharing, others added comments like, "Wow! This is so fantastic! I have never seen Robin this vulnerable. A must see for everyone!"
The second part of the new interview on The Jamie Kern Lima Show is expected to drop a week from now, as the show has been released on a weekly basis so far.
