Sep. 15—The Rockwall County Library is expanding its program offerings for disabled adults by strengthening its commitment to inclusive community engagement.

Building on its successful job training partnership with Rockwall ISD and the nonprofit My Possibilities, the library is welcoming four new adult candidates from RISD this fall. These students will receive job skills training at the library over the next three months — focusing on both work and socialization skills to help them prepare for the workforce.

Additionally, the library hosts two monthly programs for disabled adults led by Amber Waggoner, a special education teacher at Rockwall High School. Known as SHINE, which stands for "Successful, Helping, Integrate, Navigate, Educate," the program aims to foster personal growth and community involvement among participants.

The library has also partnered with the North Texas chapter of Best Buddies, an international organization dedicated to building friendships, promoting employment opportunities and developing leadership skills for individuals with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities. Best Buddies hosts monthly social activities at the library — including movie nights, game nights and special events.

Currently they are planning a Halloween party featuring costumes, food and fun scheduled for Oct. 17 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The event is open to disabled adults throughout the area and those interested in attending can RSVP by contacting Gabi Dennis at [email protected].
