New Roman Restaurant Serves Gelato in Every Meal
A new restaurant in Rome isn’t leaving the dessert menu off the table. In fact, the whole menu is the dessert menu, according to Lonely Planet.
Il Gelato D’Essai da Geppy Sferra, located in the Centocelle neighborhood in Rome, incorporates everyone’s favorite Italian dessert, gelato, into every dish it serves. Yes, even the savory ones.
“My goal is to converge gastronomy and gelato, presenting gelato in a way we never knew existed,” owner Geppy Sferra told Lonely Planet. “The gelato used on our restaurant menu is prepared no differently than traditional gelato; I’m just inviting people to consume it differently.”
The restaurant’s menu is divided into three sections: vegetarian (Gelato and the Garden), seafood (Gelato and the Sea) and meat entrees (Gelato and the Farm).
Some intriguing dishes include a chicken curry with coconut gelato, zucchini spaghetti with roasted almonds and ricotta gelato, grilled seasoned vegetables with yogurt ice cream, salmon gravadlax with grapefruit and ginger sorbetto, and sweet and sour pork with pineapple sorbetto.
Baskin Robbins has nothing on these flavors.
Of course, serving gelato in other forms other than in a cup with a tiny spoon isn’t entirely new. In Sicily, for instance, gelato has been known to be served on a brioche bun, according to WhyGoItaly. And some gelato shops in Italy have been known to serve up strange flavors, like a bright blue “Viagra” flavor, according to Food & Wine.
In addition to having a gelato dinner, the restaurant is also a traditional gelateria, with dozens of flavors like salted peanut, coffee, strawberry, pistachio, stracciatella, and more.
Whether you’re stopping in for a meal or for dessert, this place definitely looks like a place you need to put on your to-do list while in Rome. The restaurant is only open on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. More information can be found on the restaurant’s website (in Italian).
