Roommates's Holiday card nod to Death Row Records goes viral
The holidays are a time filled with traditions, which often include sending out a personalized greeting card featuring a photo of family or friends. For Austin Liberato, it’s a tradition he takes part in with his roommates, one that he takes very seriously indeed.
After creating a hilarious replica of a “very basic” holiday with two of his roommates just last year, Liberato had his first brush with viral fame. The photo of himself and his two male roomies wearing notably basic attire such as a Patagonia vest, a “Namastay in Bed” shirt, and a cropped sweatshirt was featured on the Instagram account @brosbeingbasic and gained the attention of people all over the internet.
But by the looks of the card he created this year, it seems as though Liberato didn’t crack under the pressure of his previous viral photo. Instead, he delivered another epic card, replicating Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Tupac, and Suge Knight as the faces of Death Row Records.
“This year’s Christmas card with the roommates turned out better than the expected,” Liberato wrote in the Reddit post in which he featured the photo of himself, Daniel Carrig, Lizzy Braun, and their dog, Theodore, which had gone viral by the next day.
“I posted it around 10 p.m. my time and fell asleep,” he tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “I woke up to 50,000 upvotes on Reddit and about 20 texts from different friends asking if it was me in the photo. It was a fun morning!”
The standout star of the photo is, unsurprisingly, Theodore, who was intentionally placed in Snoop Dogg’s spot. And for a dog, he seems to get the facial expression just right. As for other participants, Braun took to Instagram to comment on the viral nature of the photo. “Thanks @reddit for blasting our roommate Christmas card! Saving us big time on postage!” she jokingly captioned the photo that has now been seen by family and friends via the internet. However, Liberato says that there are still some people expecting to receive it via snail mail.
“I have received several inquiries for photo gigs,” the part-time photographer reveals, “and a number of people have DM’d me their address so that I will send them a copy of our card.” Because there’s nothing that screams holiday spirit like Death Row Records.
