Rough Edge EDC: Mail call includes RoseCraft to call my own

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – Well, stop the presses.

I finally have a Rosecraft Blades knife that I can call my own and consider a full-time member of my collection.

Readers of this column will recall that I recently reviewed a Rosecraft Blades Beaver Creek Barlow. Loved the knife, but it was only a loaner from Big Red EDC so I could take a look at it up close, put it in my hand and test it out for a week.

But just the other day, I got a Rosecraft Awanata in the mail. I had won a giveaway on an up-and-coming YouTube channel called SouthernKnifeLife (more on that later) and this was my prize.

The Awanata, which means “turtle” in the language of the indigenous Miwok tribe, is easily one of the smallest knives in my collection.

It is just 3 inches long when closed and combines elements of traditional and modern knife-making.

It is a traditional slip joint (doesn’t lock) but has modern G10 handles (a type of resin mix that has a reputation for being very durable).

The knife is definitely one of RoseCraft’s more budget-friendly knives. As of this writing, it is listed on the company’s website at $12.99, marked down from $19.99.

Even at its full price, it is still less expensive than virtually anything else on their website. Their knives are usually in the $50 to $60 range. Not super expensive, but not a budget brand either.

Rough Edge EDC: Exploring world of fixed-blade knive

The knife has a nifty 2-inch Wharncliffe blade (sloped spine that comes to a point) that looks perfect for opening packages and other light utility type work.

It has a strong half stop, great snap and appears to have a nice quality fit and finish. As my buddy JB over at Big Red EDC would note, however, it is a sample size of one.

I do like the knife and it will be a great little pocket dropper for that fifth pocket in a pair of jeans or in a spare pocket in some cargo pants.

As for how I got it, it was the prize in a recent giveaway at SouthernKnifeLife. The creative force there, James, is big on fixed-blade knives and has also done a number of reviews on Rosecraft knives, which I am afraid will become my new rabbit hole.

SouthernKnifeLife is a smaller YouTube channel with about 90 subscribers as of this writing, but it is growing fast.

Rough Edge EDC: A tale of 3 knives comes back to friendship

I am enjoying being an “early adopter” and being on the ground floor of watching and supporting this channel.

If you are interested in content on fixed blades and/or Rosecraft knives with a Southern, down-home twist, give him a look-see.

I also got a nice surprise in the mail from another source.

Mark, over at the YT channel Pocket Razors, is active in the same online knife group as myself – Saturday Knife Live on the Big Red EDC channel.

I have also become a regular on the live that Mark, aka Pocket Razors, does at 9 p.m. Mountain time each Thursday night on his own channel.

I commented one night that I loved the logo that is used for his business, Oregon Truck and Auto Authority. It features bigfoot with a takeoff on the traditional sign for National Forest Service land with the phrase “Department of Adventure.” Very cool stuff.

Anyway, next thing I know, I had a box of swag – hat, decals, patches and keychains from his company – in my mailbox.

Rough Edge EDC: Online EDC group promotes kindness, caring

Just another of example of the #dskfs ethos (do something kind for someone) created by our mutual friend Zach over at Zach’s Stuff and espoused by so many in our online knife group.

The #dskfs hashtag was created by our knife brother Zach coming out of the pandemic as a way to bring people together across the great divide we were/still are seeing in the country.
