Royal Caribbean Canceled A Cruise To Bring Water and Medical Supplies to Puerto Rico
In the wake of Hurricanes Irma and Maria, many cruise lines had to adjust their schedules, rerouting cruises to avoid the storms and the areas affected. While many have resumed business as usual, Royal Caribbean canceled another voyage this week in order to bring supplies to Puerto Rico.
Much of the island is currently without electricity, has limited cell phone service, and is short on water and fuel. Royal Caribbean sent the Adventure of the Seas to San Juan to help evacuate residents and drop off supplies, Consumerist reports. After, it is heading to St. Thomas and St. Croix to do the same, and plans to return to San Juan with more supplies.
The cruise line will bring those evacuated to Fort Lauderdale. Royal Caribbean has been helping with relief efforts from the chain of devastating storms in the Caribbean since early September, and has donated more than 30,000 gallons of water and evacuated 5,000 people so far. They've also brought items like trash bags, toilet paper, ice and generators to hurricane victims. After Hurricane Irma, Carnival cruise line also sent ships to the Caribbean to bring supplies to those in need.
Guests scheduled to travel on the September 30 Royal Caribbean cruise were given a 100% refund and a 25% credit for a future cruise.
Sixteen people have died as a result of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. If you'd like to donate to relief efforts, you can do so through organizations like United For Puerto Rico, UNICEF, or Save The Children.
