Rumer Willis is dating Derek Richard Thomas, an indie musician and producer. For years, he was the frontman for a band called Vista Kicks, a rock/soul group that released its debut album "Booty Shakers Ball" in 2017. But he announced in February 2023 that the band was breaking up.

"With everything that has happened in the past few years, and a lot has happened, we have to say goodbye to Vista Kicks," he wrote on Instagram. "Among many other reasons, we feel Vista Kicks no longer represents what we are and who we want to be."

The announcement was timed to the release of the band's fourth and final album, "All Hail Vista Maries."

Thomas went on to say that the band could get back together in the future under the name Vista Maries, but for now, they're "taking a break." He'll continue to make and produce music, he said—he runs a record label called In the DRT Records and produces a band called the Hail Maries, which featured on the Vista Kicks's final album. "But most importantly," he added, "I'm becoming a father!"

Willis, who plays guitar and has a set of pipes of her own, has been known to sing with her rocker beau. She joined him on stage in May 2022, for instance, and reportedly dueted with him at her baby shower in March.

How did Rumer Willis and her boyfriend meet?

In February 2022, Willis shared the story of how she met her "wonderful man" in an episode of Peggy Romato and Kimberly Van Der Beek's podcast "Bathroom Chronicles."

"I met him for the first time and I heard him open his mouth and sing, and I was like, 'I love this man,'" she recalled. "I was like, 'I don't know who he is,' but the way that he was singing—the heartbreak and the passion—I was like, 'I have to know this person.'"

Alas, she learned from a friend that he was in a serious relationship at the time. "I was like, 'Of course. Of course my dream man is snatched away,'" Willis said. "And then I kinda waited and I thought, 'I'm gonna let it go. Worst case scenario, maybe we can make some music together.'"

A couple of months later, however, she found out that the man of her dreams was newly single, and she reached out to him on Instagram.

"We started spending time together, and the first date we had, he just started talking in an accent to me, the whole car ride home," Willis shared. "We were talking in a Southern accent together, and I was like, 'Oh my god, this is my person. This is amazing.'"

"It's been in a bit of warp speed and not necessarily always in the right order," she continued. "But I feel so grateful that the universe and this kid for whatever reason was like, 'I'm not gonna let you guys mess this up, so I'm coming in on my timing.'"

When did Rumer Willis and her boyfriend start dating?

It's unclear when exactly Willis and Thomas started dating, but they appear to have kicked things off in 2022. In June of that year, Willis posted a picture with Thomas on Instagram with the caption "just a couple of troublemakers," and in December, she upped the ante by posting shots of them kissing.
