Run for Fun: Running through heartbreak

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – In this week’s episode of Run for Fun, we focus on how running can be a way to get through tragedy and heartbreak. For many runners, the time they spend running is a time to reflect and think or just zone out. For others, it can be something to focus on when the rest of their world is in chaos.

For Amy Cosens, her life went into chaos when her husband died of cancer in April of 2023. Sgt. Lee Cosens of the Bradenton Police Department lost his battle with cancer leaving Amy and their two young girls alone.

Amy was already on a running streak, that’s when you run every day without skipping. This “run streak” has now continued into more than 2400 days. That’s about six and a half years. She travels and runs; she grieves and runs; she is a single parent and runs.

Leigh Spann sits down with Cosens as she explains how running continues to be a type of therapy as she finds her way in this new world. Cosens explains how life has changed for her, but how running can be the one constant.

For Amy Cosens, running may not always bring joy, but it is a lifeline she’s using to keep moving forward. Be sure to watch or listen to prior episodes of Run for Fun.
