Running is a metaphor for life. I hated running as a kid, I became a smoker in college and finally kicked the habit in my mid-20s. I began running to burn calories and ultimately began doing races, from the 5K to the marathon. At 50, I’m more fit, mentally and physically, than when I was 30. My hope is that training hard and running will show my kids, 8 and 10, the benefit of grit and perseverance.

To improve my knowledge, get tips, read product reviews and ultimately improve my running.

I love the structure of a training plan, the high of finishing a long run or a race and being able to look back over my running data to see how I’ve improved. What’s more, I know how I feel when I’m not running–and I don’t like it.

I work at home and try to be flexible. Sometimes at dawn, or a lunch run in my neighborhood and even a treadmill run at night if I can’t get out before then.

Forest Park, 6 mile loop in St Louis. I’ve run all over the U.S. and it’s hands down the best urban running environment there is. And the city punches far above its weight as a running city.

Before I ran my first race, I bought a hat on my honeymoon in Hawaii in 2005. I wore it for years but still keep it, faded and wrinkled, for my marathons.

New PRs each year.
