I have always been an active person—playing basketball from the B team through varsity and then starting my policing career whereby one must definitely keep in shape! Running thus became an everyday part of my life not only to keep in shape but also to reflect and be a part of my surroundings in the early morning hours. Now in my 60s running is still part of my life and I also do some mean power-walking on the beach with my Rock My Run tunes, sometimes finishing with a fast run at the end.
Age is only a number and I know that I will keep up my running into my 70s, 80s, and probably 90s! Having the Rock My Run tunes playing while I am running certainly adds a great dimension and keeps me going at a steady pace.
Runner’s World has been a constant source for my running needs—from training techniques to upcoming events as well as learning from other runner’s experiences— beginner to expert. I always pick up another source of information that helps me as a runner in the future.
I have been running seriously since I was 26 when I was in charge of police training for new recruits. I also was a graduate of Kenneth Cooper’s Aerobics Academy which introduced me to the “behind the scenes” of running and became an accredited trainer. Thus, through this experience, running becomes a part of your life and opens the door to better nutrition, keeping yourself healthy as you age, competing with others to run yet a farther distance, and more.
My running playground is at the beach along a solitary road with quiet neighborhood side streets, a functioning lighthouse, Coast Guard Base, and miles of flat surface on the island. Other areas that I particularly love are on Royal Caribbean cruise ships, various locations around the world, i.e. Barcelona, Melbourne, and other ports of call/places visited while on vacation.
Having gone through many pairs of shoes over a lifetime of running, my favorite pair is the one that I run in now: Under Armour Hovr Infinite. I definitely stick with Under Armour for the cushioning and fantastic quality of footwear.
I completed my first half marathon this past January at the tender age of almost 65—just a week before the actual date. Now that I am officially 65, I will definitely be dangerous and speedy at the next event!
My goal is to keep running day after day, year after year, try to learn more and more about the sport, stay healthy, and eventually complete a marathon. There is no limitation on how long a runner should run as long as the body is willing and in good shape as well as the mind/spirit continues to push you step by step, one in front of the other. 75, 85, 95, 100+ Here I come!
