I was a runner in high school (800m). That was a long time ago and I had no intention of continuing, until one of my work colleagues asked about my interest to run a 5K back in 2013. I accepted the challenge. Fear and trepidation soon followed along with a proper training plan. I was in my late 40’s, married with children, a high strung type A personality with a stressful job, overweight, and not in the least bit interested in following this crazy idea of being an “athlete” at my age. Being competitive I gave it a whirl. As a result I lost weight but more importantly fell in love with running again. Soon after I found myself signing up for every 5K I could. It was like an addiction. I have done a few 10Ks and have signed up for a half. I have heard it said the 5K is a gateway to the marathon. It’s probably true because one day I think I will tackle that too. I am extremely grateful for running. It forces me to face something that will challenge me for the better.
I joined for the great articles (Marc Parent’s newbie chronicles got me hooked!), gear, and training insights. I am super excited to get the magazine. There is so much information that can help keep you motivated. Lately it’s what I need.
I run to keep my mind free. It is the best therapy for anxiety, stress, worry and depression. Most times it is my “me” time.
I love the beach. Something about the sea air, the waves crashing, and Southern California sunshine make for a great run, even when it isn’t your best run.
I love my Brooks. I also have a pair of Asics that I swoon over. I definitely have more running shoes and gear than I have regular “clothes”.
In addition to taking cruises to the Caribbean during hurricane season (!), I love dogs—pitbulls in particular. It’s why I run for charity with Angel City PitBulls (ACPB).
To continue running for as long as I can do so safely. Hopefully well into my 80’s.
