Ryan Gosling's Oscars Red Carpet Outfit Was Absolutely Kenough
There are things that Ryan Gosling can do that the rest of us simply cannot. He can bring the patriarchy to Barbie Land. He can beach! And he can wear an embellished tuxedo on the red carpet of the 2024 Oscars and make it look genuinely cool.
Now, it certainly doesn't hurt that Gosling's good looks made him a natural fit to play the Ken to Margot Robbie's Barbie in Greta Gerwig's smash-hit movie adaptation of everyone's favorite (and existentially panicked) doll. But all due credit should also be given to the tux itself, which manages to balance camera-catnip shine—it looks like some very intricate beadwork, when you zoom way in—with an otherwise sleek and streamlined sensibility. This is the sort of tailoring that works in tandem with leading-man charisma. Paired with the right person, it boosts the cool factor of the wearer while he does the same for the garment.
So, who makes it? Naturally, it's Gucci. Under the creative direction of Sabato De Sarno, the Italian label has shifted from the grandma-chic eclecticism of De Sarno's predecessor, Alessandro Michele, to something a bit more subtle and hot. This sort of tux—sharp as hell at the shoulder, a little straighter through the body, and finished with piping details to really set it apart—has already become a hallmark of his menswear output. It's refined, just a little rakish, and exactly what an actor who clearly understands that he's Kenough would wear for Hollywood's biggest night.
But Gosling doesn't stop there. At his ankles, there's a sliver of bright pink, a clear nod to the movie that brought him out this evening. And on his wrist, the TAG Heuer ambassador echoes the shimmer of his tux with a Carrera Plasma Diamant D’Avant Garde watch set with a total of 4.9 carats of diamonds, including a pink diamond in the shape of the Swiss watchmaker's shield. He'll be wearing the same watch to perform "I'm Just Ken" during the show.
All told, it's a look that meets the needs of the man, the moment, and the medium. And if that isn't what great awards-show fashion is all about well...what is?
