Same-Sex and Interracial Emoji Couples Are Here
App by app, Unicode release by Unicode release, emojis are catching up with the times. They’ve had quite a run recently: In September, the new iOs 10 brought with it a single mom and single dad, a pride flag, ballet bro twins, and a badass weightlifting woman; in August, EmojiMom launched a keyboard of over 250 pregnancy- and motherhood-related emojis to help moms better express themselves on their phones. Now, the new (and free) Love-Moji app is providing users with a set of emojis of same-sex and interracial couples, united by hearts and practicing their best kissy faces.
The app was made to promote the upcoming movie Loving, out Nov. 4, which tells the true story of interracial couple Richard and Mildred Loving. The Lovings sued the state of Virginia for the right to be married in the 1967 Supreme Court Case Loving v. Virginia and won, with the court overturning all laws prohibiting interracial marriage in the country. To celebrate the movie’s release, Twitter has also just launched an emoji to represent Richard and Mildred Loving, which self-populates when you type either “#ThisIsLoving" or “#VoteLoving." Here’s to both equality under the law and greater representation in our texts and tweets.
