Shoppers at Sam's Club will hopefully find their shopping experience a bit smoother soon, as the company announced that they will be introducing new technology that would remove the need for an employee to check people's receipts.
Sam's Club shared in a press release that it will be using a "first-of-its-kind application of artificial intelligence (AI) and computer vision technology to eliminate queuing at the club’s exit area," with 10 stores already testing the new check-out process, reporting great success.
Instead of a human looking over each shopper's receipts before they leave, Sam's Club will be using cameras to look over what's in a person's cart and confirm payment.
"We are constantly looking at ways for Sam’s Club to be the most convenient membership club and will continue to prioritize using technology to provide a truly differentiated and delightful experience for our members," said Chris Nicholas, CEO of Sam’s Club. “This is Sam’s Club at its very best, listening to feedback from members, putting their needs at the center of everything we do – and then applying digital innovations to deliver an industry-leading member experience."
The company noted that customer feedback often listed the long wait times when exiting the store as an issue. The press release also stated that the new process will allow "exit greeters" to better help customers in need of assistance.
Sam's Club stated that it will be continuously "iterating and enhancing" the technology throughout the year, and the company hopes to have the new check-out process up and running at all of its stores by the end of 2024.
Along with the new exit technology, Sam's Club also promotes the use of its Scan & Go program in the app, which lets shoppers scan their items as they go and complete payment in the app, before showing an employee the receipt to leave.
This process will only become more streamlined with the newly-announced check-out technology, allowing Sam's Club members to more easily grab their favorite snacks and get on their way!
