Sarah Hyland posts a fresh-faced selfie on World Mental Health Day: ‘You are not alone’
Sarah Hyland is commemorating World Mental Health Day with a sweet sentiment on her social media.
The “Modern Family” actress took to Instagram on Thursday in order to post a necessary reminder to any of her 6.8 million followers who may be struggling with mental health issues. In it she wrote, “You are not alone,” alongside a fresh-faced selfie.
“You are where you’re meant to be. You are surviving. You are alive. You are,” Hyland wrote. However, some were quick to jump into Hyland’s comments to claim that the message was coming from a place of privilege.
“You are rich, you are popular, you have a fiancé, you are healthy, you are pretty, you are in good shape, you are happy,” one critic noted. While another added, “Some people are alone. What you should not do is make mental health seem like a simple issue.”
But when one other follower commented, “People saying you are not alone is so frustrating to me. I am alone in this sense because no one gives a damn!” Hyland herself responded, “There is always someone who gives a damn. You just might not have met them yet.”
Many others replied to Hyland’s post with messages of gratitude for both her authenticity and the way that she uses her platform to bring light to issues, including her struggles with kidney dysplasia.
“Thanks for this,” one fan wrote. “I appreciate the hell out of celebrities making mental health more serious of a topic.”
“Girl you will forever be my hero for helping shed a light on chronic illness and mental health,” commented another.
