It isn’t unusual for friends to set each other up—inviting two people you think might vibe to a party or a dinner so they can get to know each other. But in Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr.’s case, they got together because their friend never actually showed up.
In 2000, Sarah and Freddie made plans to grab dinner with a mutual pal. But when that friend missed her flight, Sarah and Freddie (who met when they starred in the 1997 film I Know What You Did Last Summer) decided to go ahead with their plans anyway. "We'd had tons of dinners before and for some reason it just felt different that night, and organically it just transitioned into something else,” Sarah told Us Weekly.
One marriage, two kids, and 20 years later, “we still go to that restaurant for dinner,” Sarah wrote on Instagram.
Because of their roles in the Scooby-Doo franchise as Fred and Daphne, Sarah’s on Buffy The Vampire Slayer, and Freddie's in She’s All That, this was a match made in aughts heaven. They were that couple who ruled the screen and had real-life staying power.
Since having kids though, Sarah and Freddie have appeared on fewer red carpets together and focused on their family. “When my daughter was born, that was pretty much it for me,” Freddie told E! News, because being a father is “what I love to do.” But despite the more private lifestyle the couple’s adopted, the way they love each other is no different than it was during their early days. To prove it to you, Karen Donaldson, body language expert analyzed their moves over the years.
The intimacy between them is as strong as ever.
There's a lot here that speaks to just how close Freddie and Sarah are: "Her head is cradled into the crevice of his neck and their shoulders and smushed together, decreasing any and all room," Donaldson points out. Sure, it's cute, but the position of their bodies—touching at every point—also speaks to the strong bond between these two. "They are allowing each other into their intimate space. Touch and physical closeness indicates intimacy, emotional closeness, and trust," she explains.
There's no one else Sarah would rather be with...
"Their stances alone tells us they are choosing each other’s company instead of other people," says Donaldson. That's especially true in Sarah's case.
The evidence? "Sarah’s hand placement on Freddie’s lower chest area can be read as a 'he is mine' possessive gesture," she adds. It's not so much that she's warning other people to back off. Instead, she's showing pride. Because Sarah's hand is lightly placed on him and she's pressed her body up against his, Donaldson can tell she only means to subconsciously convey closeness to Freddie and pleasure in being with him.
...Because she knows Freddie will always be there for her.
Because Sarah is holding on to Freddie's hand with both of hers and leaning into him, Donaldson can tell Sarah's confident she can rely on Freddie whenever she needs to. He makes her feel supported.
Freddie takes pride in being there for Sarah.
"In this image, Freddie’s hand placement at the top of [Sarah's] shoulder is a protective pose," says Donaldson. Though Sarah might not always need him to, he's ready to have her back whenever she does. His stoic expression tells Donaldson that he's proud to do so.
Sarah is top priority.
This one might seem obvious what with Freddie looking at Sarah in awe and all, but there's more to it. "[Freddie's] entire body is turned toward her and he looks directly into Sarah’s face," Donaldson points out. This body language means he isn't just glancing over at her for a moment, his posture proves he can regularly tune out everyone and everything around him when Sarah's around. His family comes first, always.
Neither gives more to the relationship than the other.
This body language proves this marriage is totally balanced. Both Sarah and Freddie are pulling each other in with huge, genuine smiles. Neither gives more to the relationship than the other and neither controls it. Freddie and Sarah are on the same page in every way.
