Savannah Guthrie Gets Real About Why She's Glad She Waited To Have Kids

Caitlin_Flynn

If you want to have kids but aren’t in a hurry, here’s a friendly reminder to ignore the naysayers who like to tell you that you’re biological clock is ticking. (Side bar: They’re not doctors.) But don’t take it from me — listen to why Savannah Guthrie says having kids later in life has been such a wonderful experience.

The “Today” show anchor told PEOPLE that, although she always wanted to be a mom, there was a time when Guthrie thought parenthood may not be in the cards. “[I]t took us so long to get married — we dated for so long — that we thought maybe it was too late and we’d lost our chance,” she said of herself and her husband Michael Feldman, who she wed in 2014.

Later that year, Guthrie became pregnant with her first child at age 42 and gave birth to a healthy baby girl, Vale. She was 45 at the time of her second pregnancy and the couple’s son, Charley, joined the family in 2016.

Guthrie went on to explain why becoming a parent in your 40s is so great — and her reasons make total sense. “I definitely have a good head on my shoulders, I am able to prioritize, and I think there’s a luxury to feel calm enough and not to feel the same pressures as in your 20s and 30s, when you are really trying to make your career happen,” she told the outlet.

Although having kids in your 20s or 30s is certainly the right path for some parents, Guthrie’s story is an important reminder that there’s no need to panic if you want to become a mom but aren’t in a place to balance it with your career and other life obligations. Plus, you’ll have plenty of company if you decide to wait — the average age of first-time moms has steadily continued to climb over the past five decades, which means there’s no shortage of moms in their 30s and 40s on the playground these days.
