'Saved by the Bell' Cast: Where Are They Now?

Few teen shows have had the staying power of Saved by the Bell, which ran for only four seasons in its original form but spawned two made-for-TV movies, two spinoffs and a 2020 revival featuring most of the original cast. The show’s stars have also had unusually long careers, with many of them now prolific film and TV actors—and in roles that vary widely from the lovable teens they played in the early ’90s.

“I learned so much from being on that show,” Mark-Paul Gosselaar, who played Zack Morris, told Variety in 2020. “It was a classroom on the set for me of how to conduct myself as an actor. … A lot of people forget that we were the same age as the characters, so we were going through the same experiences as them. And there was no ego on the set—there was no negative energy—and when you watch the show you see that bleeding through.”

When the show returned for a two-season Peacock revival a few years ago, Elizabeth Berkley explained that the cast stayed close since the show’s original run, which made it easy for them to slip back into character. “We have such a strong bond from the original group, where we are still a part of each other’s lives,” she told Collider in 2020. “These are really rich, deep relationships in my current life, as well. But the most surreal [thing] is suddenly these faces that I have known and loved all these years, there were moments of sitting in The Max in our booth, where it was like, ‘What are we doing here, calling each other by our character names?’ That was one of the most surreal moments.”

Mark-Paul Gosselaar (Zack Morris)

Since playing lovable rogue Zack Morris on Saved by the Bell, Mark-Paul Gosselaar has worked steadily as a TV actor, starring in NYPD Blue, Franklin & Bash, Pitch and Mixed-ish. In 2020, he reprised the role of Zack—now the governor of California—in the Peacock revival of Saved by the Bell. More recently, he played himself in an episode of HBO’s Barry and has appeared on ABC’s Will Trent. He's currently starring as an abductor in NBC's Found.

Elizabeth Berkley (Jessie Spano)

After embodying Bayside High’s No. 1 overachiever, Elizabeth Berkley soon jettisoned her squeaky clean teen image by starring as Nomi Malone in the 1995 cult classic Showgirls. She went on to star in The First Wives Club, Any Given Sunday and Women in Trouble. On TV, she’s appeared in New Girl, Melissa & Joey, Titus, The L Word and CSI: Miami. In 2013, she finished in sixth place on Season 17 of Dancing With the Stars. Berkley also returned as Jessie Spano—now the guidance counselor at Bayside—for the Saved by the Bell revival.

Mario Lopez (A.C. Slater)

Mario Lopez kicked off his career as a generational heartthrob as A.C. Slater, Bayside High’s most popular jock. Lopez has since appeared on The Bold and the Beautiful and Nip/Tuck, and played himself on shows including Jane the Virgin, Nashville, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. He’s also been a fixture on TV as the host of America’s Best Dance Crew, Extra, The X Factor and Access Hollywood. Like Berkley, he’s a Dancing With the Stars alum, having finished in second place in Season 3, which aired in 2006. Lopez also returned for the Saved by the Bell revival, with A.C. Slater now the P.E. teacher and football coach at Bayside.

Tiffani Thiessen (Kelly Kapowski)

Following her turn as head cheerleader Kelly Kapowski, Tiffani Thiessen went on to star as Valerie Malone on another seminal ’90s show: Beverly Hills, 90210. Her other TV roles include stints on White Collar, Two Guys and a Girl, and Good Morning, Miami. From 2015 to 2017, she hosted a cooking show called Dinner at Tiffani’s. Thiessen also returned for the Saved by the Bell revival, which revealed that Kelly is still married to Zack after their wedding in 1994’s Saved by the Bell: Wedding in Las Vegas.

Dustin Diamond (Samuel “Screech” Powers)

After playing Bayside’s beloved dork Screech, Dustin Diamond appeared in movies including Big Fat Liar, Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star, and Pauly Shore Is Dead. He also competed in season 12 of Celebrity Big Brother U.K. in 2013. Diamond became a wrestler in his later years and competed on Hulk Hogan’s Celebrity Championship Wrestling in 2008. Diamond died at age 44 in February 2021 after a short battle with small-cell carcinoma of the lungs.

Lark Voorhies (Lisa Turtle)

Lark Voorhies rose to fame as rich girl Lisa Turtle, who spent much of her time fending off Screech’s unwanted advances. Voorhies later appeared in The Bold and the Beautiful, Family Matters and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. She began winding down her acting career in the early 2010s, but she returned as Lisa—now a successful fashion designer—for the Saved by the Bell reunion.

Dennis Haskins (Mr. Belding)

Following his turn as Bayside High’s principal, Dennis Haskins went on to appear in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, New Girl, Hot in Cleveland, and Clemency. In 2015, he reprised his role as Mr. Belding for a sketch on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
