Scarlett Johansson Explains Why She Wore Marchesa to Met Gala
Scarlett Johansson is standing by her latest fashion decision.
The Avengers star made headlines Monday night after stepping out to the 2018 Met Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City in a gown designed by Marchesa. While the actual ombre dress was stunning, it caused some controversy due to the fact that one of the brand's co-founders, Georgina Chapman, is Harvey Weinstein's estranged wife.
"I wore Marchesa because their clothes make women feel confident and beautiful, and it is my pleasure to support a brand created by two incredibly talented and important female designers," Johansson said of Chapman and fellow Marchesa co-founder, Keren Craig, in a statement to ET.
A source previously told ET that Johansson actually approached Chapman to create the custom-made dress for her ahead of fashion's biggest night out. She's the first A-list star to wear a dress from the brand since Weinstein's sexual misconduct scandal erupted through Hollywood and led to the dissolution of his nearly 10-year marriage.
"We are truly honored that Scarlett chose to wear Marchesa for the Met Gala," the fashion company shared in a statement to ET on Monday. "She is an amazingly talented actor who has incredible style and presence. It was wonderful to work so closely with her in creating this custom look."
Back in January, at the Women's March in Los Angeles, Johansson was one of many women who spoke out on the #MeToo movement, a powerful initiative that encouraged fellow victims of sexual assault and harassment to tell their own stories following the wave of allegations against Weinstein and other powerful men in Hollywood.
