A scented Melania Trump doll? Social media thinks designer toy is first lady look-alike
To celebrate his fragrance’s one-year anniversary, fashion designer Jason Wu went back to his roots and designed a doll. “I started my career designing dolls about 15 years ago, and it was my first career before fashion,” Wu told WWD. The $380 limited-edition doll, which is already sold out after landing on Net-a-Porter last week, comes with a 3-ounce bottle of Wu’s signature fragrance — and it’s not the scent that has social media buzzing.
The doll, which comes dressed in a miniature version of a gown Wu designed for model and the fragrance spokesperson Lily Aldridge, bears a striking resemblance to first lady Melania Trump, and Instagram users were quick to notice. “She is beautiful! She looks like Melania Trump, too.” commented one user, while another asked, “Melania, is that you?” The folks at Diet Prada, an Instagram account known for calling the faux pas of the fashion world, shared a side-by-side of Melania Trump with the Jason Wu fragrance doll with the caption, “@jasonwu released what appears to be a Melania Trump doll lol.” Whether or not the doll was inspired by Trump remains to be seen, but Wu is no stranger to first ladies.

The designer’s popularity spiked when first lady Michelle Obama wore one of his designs to the 2009 inaugural ball. Wu continued to dress Obama for major events, including her second inaugural ball in 2013 and her final appearance as first lady in 2017. While he hasn’t dressed current first lady Melania Trump, she donned one of his designs last summer. When asked about the pinstriped dress Trump wore, he told Page Six, “She purchased a dress from a store, and I think she looked lovely in it.” He added, “I think it’s something I’m quite open about. Dressing people is my job, so I’m happy to dress any and all people. It’s kind of part of what I do. I’m not a politician, so for me, it’s not my place to judge anybody based on political beliefs.”
