Get the Scoop on Tom Selleck's Intimate New Memoir
Tom Selleck
Tom Selleck has already proven he’s got writing chops, having co-authored the critically acclaimed Jesse Stone films with his writing partner Michael Brandman. But now, the TV icon is turning the focus on his personal and professional life in his own unique voice in the pages of an upcoming memoir, You Never Know.
Back in 2021, Selleck told Parade in an exclusive interview, “It’s very personal. I can tell you what it won’t be: It’s not going to be a score-settling thing. It’s not going to be a who-I-dated thing. There’s a certain level of privacy, but I’m being extremely intimate on the personal effect everything has had on me.”
According to a press release from Dey Street Books, an imprint of Harper Collins, Selleck will give viewers a highly personal look into the story of his "remarkable life and thoroughly accidental career."
And, the release continues, “The famed actor brings readers on his uncharted but serendipitous journey to the top in Hollywood, his temptations and distractions, his misfires and mistakes and, over time, his well-earned success.”
Despite the stellar heights his career has reached, Selleck had a difficult journey to getting his big break. The California native got his first breakthrough on the soap opera The Young and the Restless as Jed Andrews, but it was as Thomas Magnum on Magnum, P.I. that he achieved international fame.
“From the USC basketball court to a happy accident, to discovering and then embracing the work I love. It's a long bumpy road with some singles, some home runs, and a whole lot of strikeouts. I figure it's time to share the ride," said Selleck.

Along the way, he’s made celebrity friends, including Frank Sinatra, Carol Burnett, Sam Elliott and James Garner, who he considers to be his mentor, and they are all included in this memoir of never-told stories of his life.
“Hollywood is never easy, even for stars who make it look that way,” the description of the autobiography continues. “In You Never Know, Selleck explains how he’s struggled to balance his personal and professional lives, frequently adjusting his career to protect his family’s privacy and normalcy."
Selleck will also examine his entry into comedy as Dr. Richard Burke, Monica’s older boyfriend, on Friends, and his current role as NYPD Commissioner Frank Reagan on hit CBS crime series Blue Bloods, now heading into its 14th season.
Selleck's memoir, You Never Know, goes on sale May 7, 2024.
