Scrantastic Spectacular more than just fireworks

Maureen McGuigan believes the scenic surroundings, uplifting music, and sense of companionship brings people back to Courthouse Square in downtown Scranton each year to celebrate the country's independence.

The 12th annual Scrantastic Spectacular, a free, family-friendly event which begins at 4 p.m. Wednesday, will feature live bands, food and merchandise vendors, and children's activities leading up to a live performance by the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic at 8 p.m. and a fireworks display at 9:30.

McGuigan, the county's arts and culture director, feels the natural beauty of the area adds to the allure of the show.

"First of all, it's a beautiful backdrop," she said. "There are not a lot of places that do fireworks in the heart of the city, and we have a gorgeous downtown."

The festival, which usually attracts about 10,000 people, is a partnership among Lackawanna County, Scranton Tomorrow, Audcacy Inc. and the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic.

Limited seating is available, but people may bring lawn chairs to enjoy the music and fireworks.

Several traffic restrictions will be in place Wednesday to ensure a safe experience for guests.

? North Washington Avenue between Mulberry Street and Lackawanna Avenue will close at 9 a.m.

? Biden and Linden streets between Adams Avenue and Wyoming Avenue will close at 3 p.m.

? The roads will reopen at 10 p.m.

McGuigan looks forward to seeing familiar faces gather to enjoy the music and conversation.

"A lot of people come out, so there is a sense of community, and I feel like having the philharmonic play is a really a big treat because they're a professional orchestra," she said.
