Hospitals are a common setting for juicy TV dramas—Grey’s Anatomy, ER, Chicago Med, and many more—but they’re a far less common backdrop for sitcoms. Scrubs changed all that when it debuted on NBC in 2001 with a cast led by Zach Braff, Donald Faison and Sarah Chalke. Created by Bill Lawrence, the series followed a group of employees at the fictional Sacred Heart Hospital, with narration by Braff’s character, John “J.D.” Dorian. So, where is the cast now?

While the show ended for good in 2010, it lives on in the hearts of fans—and for Braff and Faison, who remain best friends. In 2020, the duo started a Scrubs rewatch podcast called Fake Doctors, Real Friends, which features guest appearances from fellow actors and comedians as well as real doctors (like U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy).

“I think we showed dudes that it’s OK to be a little bit sensitive. It’s OK to be buds who say, ‘I love you,’” Faison told British GQ in 2020 while discussing his and Braff’s onscreen relationship as J.D. and Turk. “For a really long time that was looked at as a bad thing. We might not be the original ‘bromance,’ but we’re definitely the best version of what a ‘bromance’ is because we’re very comfortable with each other. The machismo gets thrown out the window and we get to be who we really are.”

Braff, meanwhile, joked that he knew “at first sight” that his friendship with Faison was meant to be. “I was so nervous for the table read [for the first episode], and I knew who Donald was as an actor,” he recalled in the same interview. “And he turned around and gave me the warmest smile and a big hug, and then of course when we were shooting the pilot I could feel that we had really good timing together.”

'Scrubs' Cast: Where Are They Now?

Zach Braff (J.D. Dorian)

After his Emmy-nominated turn on Scrubs, Zach Braff went on to appear in Inside Amy Schumer, Undateable and Bill Nye Saves the World. He also voiced himself in two episodes of BoJack Horseman and voiced Freck in the Disney+ Obi-Wan Kenobi series. On the big screen, he’s starred in Moonshot, The Disaster Artist and the 2022 remake of Cheaper by the Dozen. Braff is also a director and screenwriter, having written and directed Wish I Was Here and A Good Person since Scrubs ended. On TV, he’s helmed episodes of Shrinking and Ted Lasso, the latter of which earned him another Emmy nomination. Since 2022, Braff and fellow Scrubs alum Donald Faison have starred together in T-Mobile ads. They also cohost a podcast called Fake Doctors, Real Friends.

Donald Faison (Christopher Turk)

Donald Faison has remained a fixture of film and TV since the end of Scrubs, starring in films including Pitch Perfect, Kick-Ass 2, The Perfect Match, Little Evil and Zach Braff’s Wish I Was Here. On TV, he’s appeared in The Exes, Drunk History, Emergence, The L Word: Generation Q and The Wonder Years. Since December 2023, he’s starred on Mike O’Malley’s sitcom Extended Family. Faison and Braff have reunited onscreen in a series of T-Mobile ads, and they cohost the podcast Fake Doctors, Real Friends.

Faison has been married to CaCee Cobb since 2012. The duo, who share two children, tied the knot in a ceremony held at Braff’s home. Faison also has four children from previous relationships.

Sarah Chalke (Elliot Reid)

Since Scrubs ended, Sarah Chalke has racked up roles in Mother’s Day, The Wrong Missy, Backstrom, Angie Tribeca, Inside Amy Schumer, Undateable, Speechless and The Conners. From 2021 to 2023, she played Kate Mularkey on the Netflix series Firefly Lane. She’s also lent her voice to shows including American Dad!, Rick and Morty, Paradise PD and Dogs in Space.

Chalke shares two children with ex-fiancé Jamie Afifi.

Neil Flynn (The Janitor)

After leaving Scrubs, Neil Flynn led the cast of The Middle from 2009 to 2018. He’s also appeared in episodes of Key & Peele, Undateable, Lopez vs Lopez and Shrinking.

Ken Jenkins (Bob Kelso)

Following his turn as chief of medicine Bob Kelso on Scrubs, Ken Jenkins starred as Chick on Cougar Town and Elder Sam on Netflix’s A Series of Unfortunate Events. He also voiced Pa Duskerton on Gravity Falls. He has not appeared onscreen since 2018.

Judy Reyes (Carla Espinosa)

Judy Reyes went on to star in the films The Circle, Smile, All Together Now and 2023’s Birth/Rebirth. Her TV resume is packed with roles on shows including Devious Maids, Jane the Virgin, Claws, Succession, Better Things, Black-ish, One Day at a Time, Search Party and Batwoman. In 2023, she starred as Marcie in the Prime Video series The Horror of Dolores Roach.

John C. McGinley (Perry Cox)

Since playing attending-turned-chief-of-medicine Perry Cox on Scrubs, John C. McGinley has done a fair amount of voice work, lending his vocals to WordGirl, Dan Vs., The Boondocks and DreamWorks Dragons: Rescue Riders. He’s also appeared in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Stan Against Evil, Chicago P.D., Ground Floor and Burn Notice.

Kerry Bishé (Lucy Bennett)

As Lucy Bennett, Kerry Bishé took over the narration of Scrubs from Zach Braff in the show’s ninth and final season. She went on to star in films including Argo, Grand Piano, Happily and How It Ends. From 2014 to 2017, she played Donna Clark on AMC’s Halt and Catch Fire. More recently, she appeared in the TV shows Penny Dreadful: City of Angels and Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber.
