This Sealy Mattress Proves Great Things Come in Boxes
There's no dearth of mattress options available. For the Men's Health Sleep Awards, we tested a slew to see which gives you the most blissful slumber.
The first thing I noticed about the Cocoon Chill by Sealy mattress was the packaging: how could a full mattress come in such a relatively small box?! Based on the narrow, rectangular package, I was certain we had either been sent the wrong thing, or the world’s thinnest mattress. When we opened the box-which measures 15" x 15" x 44"-we were amazed to see how cleverly it had been packed.
Inside, one premium memory foam mattress, loaded with cooling technology from a sleep leader: Sealy. It was indeed the right size, too. As this was our first mattress-in-a-box experience, color my wife and I intrigued.
We quickly tore off the plastic, unrolled the mattress, and had a lot of fun watching while it expanded to its full depth. (Perhaps we don’t get out of the house enough.) We were eager to put the Cocoon to the test after finally biting the bullet and retiring our old and miserable previous mattress.
While expanding, I noted the quality of construction, which seems far more durable and better-sewn than our outgoing mattress. This appears to validate why this mattress has a 10-year-long warranty. In addition, the mattress features several layers of construction which gives you a pliable base plus a memory foam layer. This memory foam layer either has an “in the bed” feel or an “on the bed” feel depending on the version you choose.
We both prefer mattresses that are on the firmer side, but I like things even firmer than my wife, so we worried about finding something that would work for us both. However, when we plopped down on the mattress after giving it enough time to expand fully and “rest," as instructed, we both had high hopes.
No funny smells lingered, so we slept on the mattress on night one. We both felt very comfortable, settled right in, and fell asleep easily without our movements disturbing one another-impressive for two people on a size full mattress. Waking up the next morning, we felt well-rested and didn’t have any soreness.
Since then, we have slept comfortably every night. It’s firm enough for me, but also flexible enough for my wife so that we’re both happy. It manages to stay fairly cool during hot and humid evenings. Given the price-an affordable $699 for the full-it's a mattress I wish we had picked up years ago.
