The cast of Today recently revisited a major moment in time in American history, and had the chance to recreate a photo from 1932 to show for it.
Al Roker, Savannah Guthrie, Hoda Kotb, Crag Melvin, and Carson Daly had the opportunity to be the first group of people to replicate an iconic picture, known as “Lunch Atop a Skyscraper.” The image features 11 construction workers eating lunch, feet dangling from high up on a beam, with New York City 850 feet below them as they took a break from building the 30 Rock building back in the early 1930s.
And starting this month, visitors coming to NYC's Rockefeller Center can also re-create one of the most enduring photographs in American history for themselves, as part of an experience called "The Beam."

During the news broadcast co-anchors' time visiting the experience, the crew took an elevator to the 69th floor of 30 Rock to the same spot where the picture was snapped to get their own version of it. They sat down on a beam and buckled in, as the beam lifted off the ground and slowly spun, giving an expansive view.
“This is like being on a ride at Universal. Hands up!” Hoda exclaimed joyfully, while Al chimed in, joking, “I think we should do the show from up here.”
The original black-and-white snap highlighted a construction project that employed 40k people during the Great Depression, and served as a homage to the American worker.
The historic portrait was first published in The New York Herald-Tribune on Oct. 2, 1932, and was actually a publicity shot, according to the Rockerfeller Center's website.
