You Have to See The Photos From 'A League of Their Own' Cast Reunion
Is there crying in baseball if it involves friends you haven't seen in, say, 24 years?
Geena Davis, aka Dottie Hinson from1992's A League of Their Own, co-founded the Bentonville Film Festival in Arkansas with the goal of empowering women and diverse voices in media. The second annual fest took place last weekend, where the silverscreen version of the Rockford Peaches converged for a softball game to cap off the event, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Davis was joined by fellow cast members Megan Cavanaugh (Marla Hooch), Ann Cusack (Shirley Baker), Anne Ramsey (Helen Haley), Tracy Reiner (Betty Spaghetti), Freddie Simpson (Ellen Sue Gotlander) and Patti Pelton (Marbleann Wilkenson).
Gina Casey, a former member of the All American Girls Professional Baseball League who played on a farm team the original Peaches drafted from, threw out the first pitch.
Plenty of young fans turned out in pink baseball uniforms and red socks, proving that, decades later, girls still look up to the Peaches:
"Identifying with a character is one of the best parts of seeing a movie, but as women, we've had to train ourselves to experience the male journey," Davis said in a recent interview with Vulture, adding that she's made a conscious choice to consider what female audience members will think.
"It's not to say we aren't girlfriends, wives, or partners-of course we are. But that's not all we are, and that's the problem," Davis continued.
At the same time, women continue to make inroads in sports. "These ladies that played in the 40s paved the road for the young kids now that get scholarships," Casey told KFSM News. "When I played, there was no such thing as scholarships. We support our own self, and I think it's great that these girls can play any sport now, any sport."
Davis said some of her ALOTO cast mates who wanted to attend had scheduling conflicts, but another reunion is in the works for the film's 25th anniversary. "We're going to have as many as we can next year," said Davis.
