See Sam Heughan Transform Into a Dwarf from 'Lord of the Rings'
Sam Heughan
Sam Heughan made a guest appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show on Tuesday, Oct. 24, where he gave fans a peek at his transformation into a dwarf from The Hobbit.
The Outlander star explained that he spent time in New Zealand to write his new book Clanlands in New Zealand, co-authored with his Men in Kilts co-star Graham McTavish, who starred as Dwalin in The Hobbit trilogy and currently lives in the country.
Though Heughan noted he didn't get a chance to meet Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson during his time there, he still had an experience any J.R.R. Tolkien fan would envy. The duo visited the Wētā Workshop in Aukland, where the animatronics, props, and aesthetics from the Lord of the Rings movies were created.
"They actually made me up to be a creature from Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit," shared Heughan. "Unfortunately, it wasn't an elf—it was a dwarf." He was transformed into Gróin, a character who appeared in The Hobbit movies.
After Kelly Clarkson asked to see a picture, the actor showed off his costume, which consisted of a big, round prosthetic nose; a long, bushy beard; and a copper-colored wig featuring various braids.
"It is quite the transformation," remarked the talk show host. "That guy is not picking up a lot of women in New York," she joked, having a chuckle.
Clanlands in New Zealand is a follow-up to the Men in Kilts stars' book Clanlands, but this time, they explored the nation's culture, from its rich history to culinary delights. The description notes that readers "learn about the length and breadth of this jewel of the Southern Seas, exploring the fascinating story of its people while testing the very limits of Graham's sanity. " It also includes a foreword written by Jackson.
Fans can snag a copy of Clanlands in New Zealand on Nov. 7.
