See St. Joseph: Downtown drinks, outdoor fun and more this weekend
Apr. 4—From art classes to historical celebrations to wine and beer samples, there's something for everyone to enjoy in this week's edition of See St. Joseph
St. Joseph is well known for many historical monuments, but one of the most noteworthy is the Pony Express, which will be celebrating its 164th anniversary this weekend.
The celebration begins at 11 a.m. Friday, April 5, with a ribbon-cutting in front of the Pony Express stable doors. From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., there will be a rounding up of western artists with displays and presentations by the artists themselves. Each building on the Pony Express campus will host its own celebration, including showing off new museum displays of artifacts donated by families in the area. Residents can also view the Pony Express Museum and campus building all day Sunday, free of charge.
St. Joseph's roughest, toughest and fastest can show off their grit this weekend at the 2024 Outlaw Adventure Run.
Run, jump and climb your way through an obstacle course, all the while supporting the YWCA's Grit Center. This safe space connects St. Joseph teens with their peers, adult mentors and a support system. Tickets for the race are $30 with student, youth and group pricing available. The Outlaw Adventure Run begins at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Heritage Park softball complex. To register, visit the race's website at https://runsignup.com/Race/Events/MO/SaintJoseph/StJosephOutlawAdventureRun.
The YWCA and Pop's Place are teaming up to host the Cornhole for a Cause tournament and silent auction. There will be a blind draw with a 50-50 payout, a silent auction and refreshments available for purchase. The event will be held rain or shine and is kid-friendly, so why not bring the whole family? Registration is $20 per person. Proceeds raised will go to the YWCA's Community Support Department to provide clean outfits and hygiene products to survivors of sexual assault. The tournament kicks off at noon Saturday at Pop's Place.
The Albrecht-Kemper Museum is inviting artists of all levels to Florence Painting with Pastels workshop.
Learn how to work in pastels with Jill Tichenor. Jill will talk about materials, show some examples of her art, demonstrate techniques and host an exercise. Be sure to bring plenty of paper. The class will go from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday with a lunch provided. To register, visit the museum's website at https://www.albrecht-kemper.org/calendar.
Discovering Downtown is easy when each shop, restaurant and bar greets you with a wine or beer sample. The Downtown Sip n' Stroll provides opportunities for both.
St. Joseph residents can choose their preferred drink, beer or wine, choose a starting location and see how much Downtown has to offer. More than 40 locations will be participating, with extras like discounts at restaurants, shopping specials, chair massages, live music and more. Even designated drivers will get special perks along the walk. The walk goes from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday. For tickets, visit The Den's website at https://theotherden.square.site.
