See St. Joseph: Peeking into the past and flying into the future
Sep. 12—The upcoming weekend will be packed with some events that take St. Joseph residents back in time while others blast them into the future. This week's edition of See St. Joseph includes Masquerade balls, home tours and plane presentations.
Every time it comes to town, people from all over the region gather in St. Joseph for the Sound of Speed Airshow, and this Friday, the community is going to give it a proper opening with a Airshow Pre-party.
"Under the Influence" will be taking the stage at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Coleman Hawkins Park to kick off the Sound of Speed Airshow Pre-party. This concert is free to everyone and is a great way to start the weekend. There's going to be food and drinks available in the concession stands across the street. Be sure to bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on. The Sound of Speed Airshow at Rosecrans Memorial Airport will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. News-Press NOW will also have special coverage of the show throughout the weekend.
Those who saved their costumes from the Bluffwoods Renaissance Fair can polish their armor because the St. Joseph Museums is hosting a Medieval Masquerade.
This one-night-only event will feature roaming entertainment, a full catered meal and even locally prepared blackberry mead. This night is not just to show off the area's medieval charms, it's also raising funds for several educational outreach programs including Big Brothers Big Sisters, Noyes Home the Rolling Hills Library and many more. The masquerade begins 6 p.m. Saturday at the Wyeth Tootle mansion. Tickets can be purchased online at stjosephmuseum.org.
For those who love historic homes, St. Joseph has opened its doors for tours of the town's most historical homes with the Jewels of St. Joseph, a showcase of architectural gems.
On the tour, six homes will be available for guests to visit in any order they like. The tour includes the Shakespeare Chateau, the Garth House, Washington Park library and more. Some homes are in the process of being restored so visitors will have the opportunity to see preservation in action. Locals and visitors from around the region snatch up these tickets quick, so those interested better get their tickets fast. Tours are open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Tickets can be purchased historicsaintjosephfoundation.com.
