Everyone’s been anticipating Selena Gomez’s big return to the stage at Sunday night’s American Music Awards, but nobody expected this. The singer, who received a kidney transplant over the summer, has gone through a number of recent life changes — including a breakup with The Weekend and reunion with ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber. And she just added a new ‘do to the list.

Gomez stepped onto the red carpet with a blonde lob, which is a first for the 25-year-old. Paired with a red lip and leather moto mini dress, she is certainly pulling off the edgy look after faking fans out during the day.

In an earlier Instagram story, Gomez seemingly debuted a new look featuring straight, choppy bangs. But as it turns out, she had another trick up her sleeve. The super dark look was evidently a wig hiding her real colored locks, which still have a hint of her darker roots.

The AMAs isn’t a new backdrop for this type of reemergence for Gomez. Just last year, she had an unexpected return to the spotlight at the event after spending some time in rehab to focus on her mental health and deal with her lupus. When accepting an award for Favorite Pop/Rock Female Artist, she shared an emotional speech about what she had been going through.

“I had to stop because I had everything and I was absolutely broken inside. I kept it all together enough to where I would never let you down but I kept it too much together to where I let myself down,” she said. “I’m not trying to get validation nor do I need it anymore. All I can say from the bottom of my heart is I am so grateful that I have the opportunity to be able to share what I love every single day with people that I love.” She concluded, “If you are broken you do not have to stay broken. If that’s anything whether you respect me or not that’s one thing you should know about me. I care about people. Thank you so much for this. This is for you.”

Now it seems as though Gomez is back on top with a new single “Wolves,” which she’s performing for the first time on the AMA’s stage. We can only hope she has more amazingly shocking moments to come.
