Why is Selena Gomez sipping from a baby bottle?
Is sipping from a baby bottle the new celebrity craze?
While it might seem like Selena Gomez is its latest convert, it’s probably safe to assume that the pop star was merely paying homage to a certain reality star when she was photographed enjoying an infant-style beverage on pal Anna Collins’s Instagram Stories this week.
Thanks to Collins’s caption, “The only way to watch [the] Vanderpump Rules Reunion,” fans can be assured that Gomez was actually referencing the Bravo reality show and one of its stars, Lala Kent. The 28-year-old Kent was recently, and rather notoriously, filmed sipping from a baby bottle filled with warm milk and honey, which is apparently part of her bedtime ritual.
While Kent’s bottle routine was mocked by some, she later defended it as a coping strategy for her anxiety.
“I started when I was first put on my antianxiety meds — I’m on a very small dose of anything that my doctor has given me, because I don’t prefer meds,” she told the Cut of her bottle, which she refers to as her “bubba.” “You know, there are a lot of people who say if you put an elastic band around your wrist, and your anxiety is out of control, you can flick it against your wrist. For me it was like … having something in my mouth makes me fall asleep. And, obviously, if I have something to suck on I don’t want to choke and die.
“So a baby bottle was just the next thing,” she added. “I’d watch babies do it, and it’s so soothing for them. So I was like, OK, maybe it would still be soothing for a grown-ass woman. And it is! It’s not something that I do on a daily basis, but anytime I’m going into intense situations, I always make sure to pack it.
“At night is when my mind keeps going. So it kind of takes the focus off of what I’m thinking about and puts it toward… sucking, I guess.”
Though Gomez has been vocal about her own experience with anxiety and depression — for which she sought professional treatment just months ago — it’s unclear if Kent’s antianxiety trick is anything more than a Vanderpump Rules in-joke for the “Bad Liar” singer.
