Selena Gomez speaks out about weight fluctuations due to her lupus medication: 'Not a model. Never will be.'
Selena Gomez is talking about weight fluctuations.
The Only Murders in the Building star, who was diagnosed with lupus in 2014 and underwent a kidney transplant three years later, went live on TikTok on Thursday and spoke about the changes her body has experienced due to medications she takes for the autoimmune disease.
"I tend to hold a lot of water weight and that happens very normally, and then, when I'm off of it, I tend to kind of lose weight," Gomez explained, adding that she hopes people don’t feel “shame” for what they’re going through, especially when “nobody knows the real story.”

“I just want people to know that you're beautiful and you're wonderful and yeah, we have days where maybe we feel like s***, but I would much rather be healthy and take care of myself,” she added. “My medications are important and I believe they are what help me. So yeah, not a model. Never will be.”
Before concluding her live stream, Gomez told her followers she loves them, adding, “Thanks for supporting me and understanding, and if not, go away, 'cause honestly, I don't believe in shaming people for body or anything."
Gomez, who last year released the documentary Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me that highlighted her struggles with mental illness as well as lupus, has previously spoken out about body shamers. Earlier this year, the star appeared at the Golden Globes, where she seemingly called out people criticizing her weight in a live TikTok with her little sister Gracie.
“I’m a little bit big right now because I enjoyed myself during the holidays,” the Disney Channel alum said, seemingly referring to a commenter’s criticism. “Right?”
In November 2022, Gomez appeared on Jay Shetty’s podcast On Purpose, where she pointed out that she isn’t perfect.
"I think I really ultimately wanted people to realize that I'm really not that put together,” she explained. I can be. And I feel much better now. But I don't want people to ever look at me and think she has it all. And she's figured it out, and she is perfect. I just want to be someone that people can genuinely walk up to and say, 'hey, I understand what you walked through. I did too.’”
