  • Selma Blair revealed on Instagram that her recent MS treatment is affecting her vision.

  • The actress says she's having trouble focusing her eyes.

  • Selma was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2018 after years of unexplained symptoms.

Selma Blair has gotten props from pretty much the entire world for being so candid about what it’s like to live with multiple sclerosis. And, in an honest new Instagram post, she opens up about an intense side effect she’s had since undergoing chemotherapy to treat her MS.

“Sunday. Rest. Gratitude. I write this with helping someone else in mind... Since chemotherapy and high doses of prednisone I have lost any ability to focus with my eyes,” she captioned a shot of herself sitting on stairs. Selma said it’s now “difficult” to be on her phone, so she’s not on social media or texting friends very much.

Selma also opened up about how difficult this particular side effect has been. “Panic sets in. Will this be permanent? How do I get to one more doctor appointment? How will I work and write when I can’t see and it’s so painful?” she wrote. “And then a simmering of knowing. Underneath all the doubt. It will be ok. Take it smaller to each moment. Let the body heal. Nourish. Walk slowly. Burst into laughter. Give my nervous system a chance. I see how wonderful and kind people can be. I see how frightening it can be. Uncertainty.”

Despite her symptoms, Selma said that she’s “choosing” to tell herself that this will pass. “And my word... it’s so beautiful today. Still cool in the shade and the whole day before us... we can do it. Breathe,” she said.

Selma then wrote a P.S. that’s beyond awesome. After having difficulty with numbness and tingling for a while now, Selma said that her left leg “is feeling the ground!!!” before hashtagging HSCT (hematopoietic stem cell transplantation), a bone marrow stem cell transplant that attempts to “reboot” the immune system (which damages the brain and spinal cord in MS), per the National MS Society. Selma hasn’t officially said that she’s undergone HSCT, but she’s hashtagged it recently in a few Instagram posts.

Selma recently revealed that she’s back home in California after spending two months away from home for an undisclosed treatment. Since then, she’s referenced having had chemotherapy as well as mentioning HSCT—and she’s had an amazingly positive outlook on things.
