Senator John McCain Has Died at 81

Longtime US senator and decorated military veteran John McCain has died at 81 after battling brain cancer. The news was confirmed on Saturday with a statement:

"Senator John Sidney McCain III died at 4:28pm on August 25, 2018. With the Senator when he passed were his wife Cindy and their family. At his death, he had served the United States of America faithfully for sixty years."

McCain served the United States, first in the U.S. Navy, where he was imprisoned for more than five years during the Vietnam War. After his military service, McCain was elected to the U.S. House and the U.S. Senate, where he represented the state of Arizona.

During his Republican presidential nomination speech in 2000, he spoke about how much he loved the United States.

“I fell in love with my country when I was a prisoner in someone else’s," he said. "I loved it for its decency, for its faith in the wisdom, justice, and goodness of its people. I loved it because it was not just a place but an idea, a cause worth fighting for. I was never the same again; I wasn’t my own man anymore; I was my country’s.”

His daughter tweeted this statement earlier today, saying "All that I am is thanks to him."
