Serena Williams' Husband Asks Reddit to Replace Him with a Black Candidate
Serena Williams' husband, Alexis Ohanian, has stepped down from the Reddit board.
In a statement regarding his decision, Ohanian revealed, "I have urged them to fill my seat with a Black candidate, and I will use future gains on my Reddit stock to serve the Black community, chiefly to curb racial hate, and I’m starting with a pledge of $1M to Colin Kaepernick’s Know Your Rights Camp."
Williams supported her husband's decision and tweeted, "Having diverse views on any boards is important. So proud of you Alexis. I know Olympia will be too."
Reddit cofounder, Alexis Ohanian, has announced that he is stepping down as a member of the board.
Serena Williams' husband discussed his decision on his website and wrote, "It is long overdue to do the right thing. I’m doing this for me, for my family, and for my country." He continued, "I’m writing this as a father who needs to be able to answer his Black daughter when she asks: 'What did you do?'"
He also posted his statement as an Instagram video, encouraging his follows to help "fix our broken nation."
Olympia's father continued, "I have resigned as a member of the reddit board, I have urged them to fill my seat with a Black candidate, and I will use future gains on my Reddit stock to serve the Black community, chiefly to curb racial hate, and I’m starting with a pledge of $1M to Colin Kaepernick’s Know Your Rights Camp."
Finally, Ohanian said, "I believe resignation can actually be an act of leadership from people in power right now. To everyone fighting to fix our broken nation: do not stop."
Williams responded to her husband's decision and tweeted, "Having diverse views on any boards is important. So proud of you Alexis. I know Olympia will be too."
