This Shapeshifting Clock Is Gorgeous—And Could Help Your Stress Levels
We appreciate technology for all the ways it makes our lives easier and faster, yet at the same time, we often find ourselves craving simplicity-especially when it comes to the home, where design and comfort are key to helping us unwind and relax. For every new home tool that folds the laundry, there's a headline about how sales of real, printed books are up.
Plenty of designers and brands tapping into those dueling desires. One in particular who has caught our attention is Animaro.
This London-based furniture design studio combines art and engineering to create timeless yet cutting-edge pieces that are more than just functional. Right now, their line includes a variety of light fixtures, shades, and a side chair, all of which have a decidedly retro and artful flair. Think accordion-like structures and hardware reminiscent of old clock gears. Each piece also shares a flexibility which makes them a lot more versatile, should your design needs or moods change.
We're most excited about a project that's still under development: the Solstice clock, a kinetic timepiece. Specifically, it's a clock that tells time the old-fashioned way (that is, with arms) as well as by...shapeshifting. If you’re wondering how exactly you'd be able to tell what time it is by looking at a shape, it's actually pretty simple: Basically, the diamond shapes in the clock grow larger when the sun is higher in the sky, then get narrower as day turns into night.
Designed to inspire a more relaxed view on time, the Solstice clock may even help owners de-stress after a long day.
In fact, "for many, time and a need for absolute accuracy has become a source of stress," says Matt Gilbert, founder and designer at Animaro. "When designing the Solstice clock, I wanted to make its movement represent the passing of time in a way that was beautiful and peaceful, taking inspiration from flowers opening in response to light."
If this sounds like a clock you need in your home, pre-order and contribute on Kickstarter so Animaro can bring it to life.
