Sharing Gowns for Good at the BCNY’s Green Gala
Last week the Boys' Club of New York raised $1.4 million to support sustainable programs for the boys and young men, focusing on recycling and ecology initiatives, gardening projects, and environmental education. But the BCNY Women’s Board took the theme of sustainability one step further, “shopping” in each others’ closets for dresses to wear rather than buying new ones. “Sustainability is so important and unfortunately fashion isn't always very environmentally friendly,” Anjali Melwani, the Women’s Board president said. “So we thought, ‘let’s really go for it and swap dresses for the event,’ we all have a gown or two to share.” Board members gathered in Melwani’s apartment on a sunny morning the week before the gala, bringing their own dresses to share with others and leaving with a “new” dress to wear.
The Green Gala was considered a great success with more than 400 guests attending at The Pierre, including fashion designer Tory Burch, shoe designer Tabitha Simmons, and Inside Edition anchor Deborah Norville.
