'Shark Tank's Barbara Corcoran Shares How a Simple Wool Coat Led to Her Success
Barbara Corcoran is spilling her secrets to success, and apparently, style is key.
In a video captioned, "GRWM [get ready with me] while I tell you how a coat changed my life," the Shark Tank star does exactly that and tells her social media followers how she believes a wool coat helped her get a leg up in her career simply by boosting her confidence, all while her talented glam squad gets to work.
"When I first started my brokerage business," Corcoran recalled, "I realized that everyone successful looked the part."
"At the time, I was still wearing my old navy blue peacoat from New Jersey and knew it was going to be a while before I could afford a new one. What I didn't figure was that I would rent an apartment to a customer the first week in business," she said, noting that she put the "$340 commission check right in my pocket."
Corcoran, now 74, then described running "right over to Bergdorf Goodman's to buy the fanciest coat in the store–she was the one made out of real wool with a big brown and white print, with a high collar and cuffs to match, and for only $320, plus tax."
"I handed the woman my old peacoat and wore my [new] coat right out of the store," The Corcoran Group founder said with a grin. "My new coat made me feel just like the big deal I hoped to become."
She called the jacket "the best investment I ever made" and went on to say she wore it for the next four years. "The coat gave me the one thing I so desperately needed: confidence. And in my coat, I worked like crazy to become as successful as I already looked."
"So the lesson I learned, and never forgot, was that perception creates reality. Not the other way around," she shared. "You've got to look the part of who you want to become."
