TOPEKA (KSNT) – The Shawnee County Parks and Rec certified their new lifeguard staff on Sunday, May 11.

Lifeguard training took place at the Hillcrest Pool. This is part of a twenty-two-hour certification course. It covered everything from breathing, cardiac emergencies, first-aid, CPR and in water skills.

“We practice all sorts of different rescues that could happen at our pool, whether that person is on top of the water, in deep water, below the surface, how to get them out of the water and how to care for them,” Shawnee County Parks and Rec Aquatic Supervisor Zach Kanicki said.
