She Was Comforted By an Angel Following Heart Surgery

When my doctor informed me I needed open-heart surgery for a faulty heart valve, I was stunned. I had thought the recent episodes of mild chest pain were due to overexertion.

I was scared, but at least the timing was a blessing. Seven months before, my mother had passed after a year-long battle with breast cancer. My family and I had cared for her during her illness. I couldn’t have cared for her while recovering from my own health issues, and I know my mom would’ve been more stressed worrying about me.

Unfortunately, after my surgery, I had some complications.

“I’m sorry, Kathy,” the nurse said. “Until your vitals improve, you’ll need to stay in the cardiac ICU unit.” Tears welled in my eyes.

Feeling afraid, that night, before I went to sleep, I prayed for a quick recovery. In the middle of the night, I woke up and saw a figure rushing around the dimly lit room. I thought it was a nurse doing her rounds. The shadow studied the IV bag. Then a gentle hand touched my forehead like a parent would do to a child to check a temperature.

Just a moment later, as I fully opened my eyes there was no one there. Confused, I started to drift off to sleep, and suddenly, the figure appeared again. This time, a hand patted my arm. A wave of comfort and warmth flowed through me. Soon, I drifted back to sleep.

The next morning, the nurse strolled in with a cheery smile. “Your labs look much better today. You should be going home in a few days.”

My prayer for a speedy recovery had been answered. I like to think my mom visited that night as my healing angel. After all, she had been a registered nurse for 35 years. She cared for me like I had taken care of her.
