The Shell Jewelry to Wear This Summer

Calling it with confidence: 2024 is the summer that shell jewelry makes its comeback. A far cry from the pukka shell necklaces that the term "no doubt" brings to mind, the pieces of this season evoke an understated texture and seasonal pep with all of the sophistication and whimsy expected to elevate and adorn. Rest assured, any hesitation you might have about the trend of yesteryear is met with expert advice for how to look current and fashion forward, and for that we turn to Renata Quaglia, fashion plate founder of the recently launched Renata Q., whose pieces meld artisanal crochet with seashells (and are handmade in NYC!). Renata explains that while there is a very clear image of shell jewelryātypically denoting a "seashell on a string with a metallic clasp," it is craftsmanship that sets the Renata Q. pieces apart from the pack.
"Our signature closure features three crochet-covered buttons, offering a unique fastening option. The blend of natural elements makes them simple yet refined; I like to think of them as an ode to mother natureās beautiful creations," she says. As such, when shopping for shell pieces to wear for the season, take note of Quaglia's tip on what's current by reaching for pieces with a reverence to natural elements, whether that be with contrasting materials, or artisanal details.
As for how to incorporate a piece into your own signature style, Quaglia explains how she would wear her pieces. "The brandās origin story begins in Formentera, where my friends like Giovanna Battaglia Engelbert paired the necklaces with chic swimsuits, flowy pareos... barefoot for sunset drinks at a local chiringuito kind of vibe," she says. "That being said, I love seeing them styled with a more formal look (think: power suit) like my friend and stylist Holly Scott Lidgett did on Ruth Wilson in the city. Personally, I like to layer it with gold jewelry or, when on vacation, with very long, single-strand tiny shell necklaces." We say this is advice that applies to the whole genre.
Below, Quaglia's favorite piece from the very first Renata Q. Collection, and some of our other favorite shell jewelry pieces to wear with aplomb this season.

"I have a few favorites but the Cucul necklace features an unusually shaped, asymmetric seashell that reminds me of a very cool design piece," says Quaglia. "It feels like a piece of wearable art, thatās both architectural and natural at the same time."
