'She's ... the queen': Queen Elizabeth is being rich-shamed — and her fans aren't having it
Every Christmas Day in the U.K., Queen Elizabeth delivers a heartfelt Christmas message.
This year, though the queen spoke beautifully on finding unity in the midst of Brexit and encouraged people to maintain goodwill and “put aside their differences,” some viewers were not impressed by her delivery — or her furniture.
The queen’s speech was recorded in the White Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace, where a golden grand piano — a piece originally purchased by Queen Victoria — sits in the background. The luxurious room also features a stunning fireplace and other opulent furnishings.
For some people, the stark contrast between royal opulence and what the mundane person can afford sparked a bit of disharmony.
“Always warms an old republican’s heart to see the billionaire head of an antiquated institution surrounding themselves with gold in their modest 775-roomed detached home, while others are f***ing struggling to make ends meet,” one person posted to Twitter.
One of the reasons that I despise the Royal Family.. yearly speech harping on about pulling together blah blah. This coming from a billionaire sat in front of a gold piano #QueensMessage 😴💤 pic.twitter.com/9BYtL9HQRh

Dear subjects. Look at all the gold shit I have. My table is glazed with the tears of the poor.#QueensMessage #QueensSpeech pic.twitter.com/CY9y50qXcG

Ah the Queen's message. I love getting yelled at by an old publicly-funded billionaire with a gold piano that we should all be happier and less angry

Why do we still fall for this? A true monarch would have stepped in this year, vocally done something about the hell this country is going through.
Instead we have had to watch two 'princesses' be the centre of attention, that piano could fund a homeless charity. pic.twitter.com/onGDB3FvZg

Unless the queen is to announce that she'll be selling her millions of pounds of personal jewels and gifts in order to house her rough sleeping subjects instantly, I'll be giving it a miss today Queenie.👍 pic.twitter.com/g6rSf6btab— Carole-Anne Collins (@itsme3636) December 25, 2018
I liked the #QueensMessage this #Christmas, reflecting on global conflicts with personal anecdotes of war and peace. Somehow, her words on difficult times would have been more effective and authentic without the golden piano and the opulence. #BuckinghamPalace #Westminster pic.twitter.com/YriEQkBdqc

But others are mocking the backlash. After all, if the queen can’t get away with owning a gold piano, who can?

We’re all being angry the Queen is rich, are we? Did we not know this before?

Yes, I’m shocked – shocked – to discover that the Queen lives in a palace that contains museum quality furniture. Who ever would have imagined that?

Horrors! An actual Queen in an actual palace with a piano bought by Queen Victoria in the background. Who would have thunk?
