'She's ... the queen': Queen Elizabeth is being rich-shamed — and her fans aren't having it
Every Christmas Day in the U.K., Queen Elizabeth delivers a heartfelt Christmas message.
This year, though the queen spoke beautifully on finding unity in the midst of Brexit and encouraged people to maintain goodwill and “put aside their differences,” some viewers were not impressed by her delivery — or her furniture.
The queen’s speech was recorded in the White Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace, where a golden grand piano — a piece originally purchased by Queen Victoria — sits in the background. The luxurious room also features a stunning fireplace and other opulent furnishings.
For some people, the stark contrast between royal opulence and what the mundane person can afford sparked a bit of disharmony.
“Always warms an old republican’s heart to see the billionaire head of an antiquated institution surrounding themselves with gold in their modest 775-roomed detached home, while others are f***ing struggling to make ends meet,” one person posted to Twitter.
