'Shocked' Britney Spears Breaks Silence on Husband Sam Asghari Filing for Divorce
Britney Spears is proving she's "Stronger" than people may expect amid her divorce.
Late on Friday, August 18, the pop icon took to Instagram to address her split from husband of over a year, Sam Asghari. Alongside a vigorous dance video, in which the "Toxic" singer wore neon green bikini bottoms and a black crop top, Spears confirmed that she and Asghari, 29, "are no longer together."
"Six years is a long time to be with someone so, I’m a little shocked," she continued. "But … I’m not here to explain why because its honestly nobody’s business!!! But, I couldn’t take the pain anymore honestly!!!"
Further in her update, Spears thanked those who've reached out and sent their well wishes. "I’ve been playing it strong for way too long," she added, "and my Instagram may seem perfect but it’s far from reality and I think we all know that!!! I would love to show my emotions and tears on how I really feel but some reason I’ve always had to hide my weaknesses!!!"
She then seemingly referenced the complicated relationship with her father Jamie Spears, 71, who oversaw her conservatorship, which ran for over a decade and officially came to an end in November 2021.
"You’re supposed to be loved unconditionally…not under conditions," she concluded. "So I will be as strong as I can and do my best!!! And I’m actually doing pretty damn good!!! Anyways have a good day and don’t forget to smile!!! "
This is the first time that Spears has formally spoken out about her breakup from Asghari. The model released his own statement on August 17, the same day it was confirmed that he had filed for divorce.
On his Instagram Story, he shared that "after six years of love and commitment to each other" he and Spears had "decided to end our journey together."
He continued, "We will hold onto the love and respect we have for each other and I wish her the best always."
Regarding where he stands with his estranged wife, Asghari noted, "S--t happens. Asking for privacy seems rediculous [sic] so I will just ask for everyone including the media to be kind and thoughtful."
It's said the pair split back in July, despite reports of their separation not making headlines until August.
In June 2022, Spears married third husband Asghari in an intimate ceremony attended by several A-listers, including Madonna, Selena Gomez, Paris Hilton and Drew Barrymore, among others.
She was previously wed to childhood friend Jason Alexander—the marriage was infamously annulled 55 hours after their Las Vegas elopement in 2004—and to dancer Kevin Federline, who is the father to her sons, Jayden, 16, and Sean Preston, 17.
