When Will Shogun Season 2 Release?
Shogun is the show to watch right now, but when will Shogun season 2 release?
Shogun showrunners Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo have some bad news for those looking forward to a follow-up. Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Marks says, "We took the story to the end of the book and put a period at the end of that sentence. We love how the book ends; it was one of the reasons why we both knew we wanted to do it — and we ended in exactly that place.”
The series, set in Japan in the year 1600, is based on the 1975 novel of the same name by James Clavell. A second season of Shogun would go beyond the source material and into uncharted territory.
Saying that, it’s not Clavell’s only book begging to get a lavish adaptation. There are five more spanning different regions in Asia and the Middle-East, including Hong Kong, Iran, and Japan in a different time setting.
His 1993 novel, Gai-Jin, taking place in Japan in 1862, and could form the basis of a Shogun successor. Marks, however, wants viewers to savor their time with the original miniseries, because it won’t last.
"I've been party to this in the past with shows like this,” says Marks, “where you build a whole factory, and it only pumps out ten cars and closes up shop. It's a bummer."
