Sierra Kerr and Erin Brooks to Make CT Debut as Wildcards in Fiji Pro
You’d be hard-pressed to find a more tube-savvy pair of teenage girls than Sierra Kerr and Erin Brooks. And next month we’ll get to see their first CT heats at (hopefully) pumping Cloudbreak.
On Monday, the WSL announced that both girls will have wildcard slots for the Corona Fiji Pro at Cloudbreak later this summer. The final event on the Championship Tour is scheduled to run between August 20 and 29, the first time the WSL has hosted an event at Cloudbreak since 2017. And because this is the last contest before the WSL finals, Sierra and Erin both have the potential to cause major upsets and rearrange the rankings prior to the World Title showdown at Lower Trestles.
Sierra (age 17) and Erin (16) have never surfed a CT heat. But both have spent solid chunks of time in heaving lefts in the South Pacific and Indonesia. As a goofy-foot, Erin looks particularly adept at knifing drops on her forehand, as evidenced by her performances at Padang Padang, Kandui and Pipeline. She’s currently leading the Challenger Series rankings, and with luck, she’ll be joining the CT ranks full-time next year.
Sierra, meanwhile, continues her own world tour with her father, Josh Kerr. Together they’ve found heaving tubes from Indonesia and Teahupo'o. Last month, Sierra scored all-time Nias during the QS event, casually threading overhead barrels in front of her dad. And lest we forget, Sierra is the 2024 World Junior Champion, so she’s got competitive chops, too.
The WSL also reminded us that four-time Cloudbreak champ Kelly Slater will get one of two men’s wildcards. You never know with Kelly, but as it stands, this next event is the last confirmed CT event of his career. Though it’s highly probable he could get another wildcard into Pipeline in 2025. The second men’s wildcard will go to the winner of the Fiji Trials, which will be held on a single day at Cloudbreak between July 1 and 31.
