Simu Liu Reveals He Danced With a Major Injury at the Oscars

Barbie star Simu Liu was one of many Kens who joined Ryan Gosling on stage at the Oscars for a larger-than-life performance of "I'm Just Ken." And while Liu might not have shown it on his face or in his movements, the Canadian actor is actually in the midst of recovering from a major injury.

Back in October 2023, Liu shared on Instagram that he tore his Achilles tendon while playing basketball with friends. He was on crutches and eventually underwent surgery for the injury. And while his recovery is ongoing, he wasn't going to let it stop him from participating in the unforgettable Oscars performance.

Liu recounted his thought process in a post-Oscars appearance on Today With Hoda & Jenna.

"I’m like four months into recovering from Achilles surgery, but I’m powering through it because I’m like, 'I feel like this is going to be a historic moment that I never would forgive myself if I wasn’t a part of,'" he said honestly.

That doesn't mean he jumped into it without a second thought. "I definitely was like, 'Should I be doing this?' I was talking to my [physical therapist] and he’s like 'Ehhhh,' but I was like, 'Whatever, I’m going to do it.' But it came together quite quickly. Ryan has such a specific vision for what he wanted. And it was a perfect moment," he said.

After he tore his Achilles, Liu even poked fun at his injury by dressing up as New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers for Halloween. Rodgers famously tore his Achilles tendon just minutes into his first season with the Jets last year.

Whether you're Barbie or Ken, remember to consult medical professionals before any strenuous physical activity while recovering from an injury.
