Six ways to embrace 2018 trends now
The beginning of a new year signals change, and it's an ideal time to take stock of your wardrobe and hit refresh. Whether you're keen to try a new colour, invest in cocktail jewellery or embrace dresses, here's how to get ahead in the 2018 style stakes, according to The Telegraph's fashion editors§...
I will... make the trench 2.0 my go-to jacket
Alexander McQueen belted trench coat, £3275, Matches Fashion
I can't wait to get my hands on one of 2018's brilliantly elevated trench coats - if money were no object, it would be Alexander McQueen's embroidered version. They're timeless, practical, and singularly flattering - which is more than I can say for 2017's cardigans, which I'll be leaving firmly in the past. Cosy they may be, but with a bust, they tend to look frumpy, rather than fashionable. CGE
I will... use jazzy jewellery to brighten up my outfits
My resolution is to wear more jazzy jewellery - especially in January when every outfit has the capability to lift your mood a little. I've been committed to the same minimalist bar studs and my engagement ring for most of 2017, so for the new year I'm going to aim to add some gorgeous, Celine-style earrings into the mix. CL
I will... embrace pastels
The lilac, mint and blush looks presented by Joseph creative director Louise Trotter for the brand's SS18 collection were enough to make me want to embrace pastels with open arms.
But I think I'll be bidding farewell to exceptionally cheap handbags. Three broken straps later and I'm starting to think a mid-price bag (think Manu Atelier and Yuzefi) would be a more than worthy investment... OBS
I will... embrace suiting
I've long been a fan of co-ords (they just make getting dressed so much easier, don't they?) so naturally, suiting is the next step. Like many, I'm naturally drawn to darker or subtle shades like grey and navy, but for 2018 I'll be attempting to leave my comfort zone and will be tracking down a bright suit.
While my love affair with Converse All Stars goes back as far as I can remember, 2018 may be the year they exit my wardrobe; I recently wore a pair to work but it rained unexpectedly and my feet were soaked. I can't rely on the Great British weather to keep my dry so perhaps it's time to invest in a leather pair... KT
I will... add some feminine flounces to my wardrobe
I thought I was bored of frills and florals but Natacha Ramsay-Levi's debut Chloe show made me reconsider. Her botanical patterns with a harder edge and attitude-laden styling meant that a traditionally too-sweet look suddenly looked appealing again.
I will... choose lilac over pink
I'm looking forward to lilac, as a tonic to millennial pink, in all shades. I've already invested in a crew neck jumper to wear with navy blue in the winter and in the summer with khaki shades.
I'm bidding goodbye the cut out asymmetric top - I don't get you. I never have and I never will. It's not me, it's definitely you. Why I would want to be warm on one side of my body and cold on the other is beyond me. Or even worse, trying to navigate what to wear under an asymmetric jumper where random bits of skin are on show. No, thank you. HE
I will... reinstate The Hero Dress in my wardrobe
I may sound banal but for 2018, I have decided to re-adopt the dress. One-stop-shop dress-dressing requires minimum effort and achieves maximum impact. Wear with knee high boots in colder months and pumps or sandals come the summer. Brock Collection's slinky-floral pieces are just the right side of milkmaid-chic.
Come New Year I will be ditching the trusted jeans-and-trainers look. The well trodden path is easy in the mornings (read: lazy) but shows a lack of imagination. So out with the jeans, in favour of a dress (see above) and wise investments in comfortable heels means that trainers no longer have a place in my wardrobe. SW
