Skier Catches Deep Snow During Snowbird's "First Powder Day Of 2024"
Well, folks, it finally happened. The 2023-2024 ski season is finally kicking into gear.
Earlier this month, Lucas Catania—a skier and filmmaker—caught the first powder day of 2024 at Snowbird, Utah. It looked to be one for the books.
Since this past Thursday, Snowbird's picked up a whopping 25 inches—more than enough to offer powder skiing and improved coverage. Like several others throughout Utah, the resort had been struggling with low snowfall for most of December.
And the powder train doesn't seem to be slowing down. Between Tuesday and Thursday, somewhere in the ballpark range of two-plus feet of snow are expected at Snowbird.
Catania, who creates vlogs about skiing, is perfectly positioned to take advantage of the North America-wide storm. He spends his winters in a van traveling to ski resorts, chasing the best conditions throughout the nation.
Although, for the next few days, I'm not sure how much storm-chasing Catania will have to do. The skiing anywhere in the west, from Utah to Washington, is shaping up to be top-notch this week. In fact, if I were him, I'd stay put—I imagine the driving conditions will be nightmarish across much of the Mountain West.
I'm not complaining, though. I'll take a few traffic jams (okay, probably a lot of traffic jams) over whatever was going on last month. Fingers crossed the snow keeps coming.
