Skier Ticks Off Classic Descents On Vermont's Tallest Peak
Vermont-based skier and photographer Brooks Curran put out another banger making the East Coast look stellar (not that it needs help with the kind of season it's having right now).
The POV footage posted last month to YouTube shows "maybe the best morning of skiing I've ever had. Got to link up three classic lines in a row in sunny untracked pow."
"One winter morning atop Vermont's highest peak... three classic ski lines."
The POV shows Curran whipping through a line lined by snow-covered trees, powder galore.
Curran was skiing Mt. Mansfield at Stowe, and the last route was likely Spring Time Special, an insanely technical chute involving at least one mandatory air.
Fatmap explains Spring Time Special as a very involved and extreme freeride route. "Once you pass the Rock Garden, continue southeast along the cliff band. Finding the top will require some scoping and difficult route finding, as well as some bushwhacking."
Not to be confused with West Coast style pole whacking. It's the East Coast, it's hardcore, we bushwhack.
Fatmap continues, "Beware of 'sucker chutes' that look clean from above but terminate in large cliffs. Once you are 100% sure you are at the top, drop in, the chute begins very steeply, with only about a ski length of room. A few hop turns will bring you to the crux. The chute chokes out and sometimes has a 5 foot mandatory air."
As if it couldn't get worse (or better?) "after this the right wall of the chute ends and becomes a 50 foot cliff. This makes the chute a no fall zone. Once you hop the air, you will be going fast with very little room to speed check. After a few more turns, you’ll reach the exit straight line, which spits you into rock Rock Garden, making it very technical."
Very technical is an understatement.
Fatmap continues, "this insane line is rarely skied and should only be attempted by expert skiers who are very confident in exposed terrain."
Skiers like Brooks Curran.
